The Savannah Way - The String Contingent

As composers and performers; Chris, Graham and Holly take inspiration from the landscapes and cultures they travel through, from the iconic Great Ocean Road (VIC), the dense forests of New Zealand, the wild coastline of the Isle of Lewis (Scotland), the pristine lakes of Finland, to the majestic peaks of the Colorado mountains (USA).

In 2018 they chose to explore more of the band’s home country, away from the populated areas and their usual touring circuits of the East coast, seeking a deeper experience and understanding of Australia’s multifaceted landscapes, cultures and peoples. Over six weeks of creative development, they drove the Savannah Way from Cairns (QLD) to Broome (WA), including side trips to Cooktown, Alice Springs, Darwin, the Gibb River Road and the Dampier Peninsular, and explored ancient rain-forests, isolated outback towns, endless beaches, crocodile infested rivers, vast savannah planes and sandy deserts. Much of the music written on the trip was accompanied by morning birdsong, the plop of feeding fish, with bull-dust between their teeth, the echo of caves around them, or sand between their toes. This concert will feature this music, and the stories of the people and places they travelled through.
