Stories Behind the Façade

Through a shared love for storytelling and keen interest in architecture and heritage, Stories Behind the Façade is a yearlong collaboration between mother-daughter artists, Jola Pawlowska and Sam Moon, alongside Tex Moon and Jesse Raaen.

Inspired by the unique Polish paper cutting art form Wycinanki (pronounced vee-chee-none-kee) the artworks in this exhibition are a nod to Jola and Sam’s Polish heritage as they extend the boundaries of this traditional folk art style.

The exhibition showcases five significant heritage buildings in the Dandenong Ranges. History and stories are revealed through multiple layers, brought to life by recorded memories, photographs and building biographies.

The buildings featured are:

  • Burnham Beeches / Art Deco mansion (arch. Harry Norris)
  • Miller-Short House / Mid-century entertainer (arch. Frederick Romberg)
  • Mawarra / Arts and crafts home (arch. Harold Desbrowe-Annear + Ind. Edna Walling)
  • Kenloch Estate / Edwardian home and eatery
  • St Michael and All Angels / Church (arch. Keith Reid)
