The Big Draw

The Big Draw is an international month-long celebration of drawing that encourages community participation and attracts more than 280,000 people at events across the globe in October of each year.

Big Draw in the Yarra Ranges

Council hosted Big Draw in Yarra Ranges in 2013 and 2014 with a diverse range of drawing activities across the region to raise the profile of drawing as a tool for thought, creativity, social and cultural engagement. The entire Yarra Ranges community were encouraged to get involved.

2014 ‘Wish You Were Here’

Community members drew what they loved about Yarra Ranges on postcards, connecting with the international Big Draw theme 'It's Our World'. More than 10,000 postcards were given to the community and drawings were created at Puffing Billy during the Seniors Festival, schools, waiting rooms, cultural venues and the beautiful Karwarra Australian Plant Nursery.

Local artist Shelley Krycer used the postcards to inform the design of four public art installations across Yarra Ranges.

2013 ‘Draw Tomorrow’

The theme ‘Draw Tomorrow’ saw entire blackboard walls of chalk drawing, floor to ceiling scrolls of paper, thumbprint self-portraits, interactive houses printed with historical maps of the area and over 2000 coasters grew into a collaborative community art work.

Four cultural venues including Yarra Ranges Regional Museum, Red Earth Gallery Mooroolbark, The Memo Healesville and Arts Centre Warburton hosted over 20 programs from school holiday drawing workshops to drawing in the dark. There were programs for all ages and all abilities.
