We asked our community for unexpected moves, in unexpected places, by unexpected people. What we got was Dance Here – a month long dance extravaganza, featuring a diverse range of dance and movement workshops, performances and pop-up events across Yarra Ranges from 15 March – 15 April 2016.
- 39 community-driven dance projects
- Over 800 people dancing
- 50 artists involved
- More than 75 events
- Dancing in parks, on the streets, at festivals, on buses, in schools, community halls, dance studios, museums, cafes, libraries and local arts centres
“I have felt so much more connected to this community by participating in these dance events. I am discovering a wealth of creative, passionate, artistic, positive and spiritual young people, strengthening my faith in humanity and the future”
- Laurie Pradier, Dance Here participant
Dance Here is part of Dance Tracks, Yarra Ranges Council’s 3 year initiative from in partnership with Ausdance and Burrinja Cultural Centre to increase awareness and participation in dance and strengthen local dance networks.
The idea for Dance Here came from the community – it was developed out of a series of consultations with key dance leaders in the area. We did a call out for project proposals that would get people moving in the Yarra Ranges. All projects had to be free and fully accessible to all community members.
